How to Clear Fat-Based Clogs and Drain Obstructions

If you've got a clogged sink, don't stress! We know you might be tempted to call a plumber right away (in which case, we'd love to help you!), but there are a couple things you can do first to try and get rid of the clogs.

Here are two ways you can clear fat-based clogs and drain obstructions:

Fat-Based Clogs When leftover grease, oil or fat gets poured down your drain, it can build up and cause clogs. That’s why it’s so important to dispose of leftover cooking grease in the garbage can instead of down the drain. If you’ve identified your clog as fat-based, begin by boiling a large pot of water on the stove. Turn off the heat and let it cool for about two to three minutes. Then carefully pour the entire pot down your sink drain. If this doesn’t completely remove the clog, repeat the process until it does. If your clog is indeed caused by oil or grease, the hot water will melt it enough for it to be flushed out.

Drain Obstructions If your clog is being caused by a solid object or a piece of food, the hot water trick won't work. If there is something in your drain, no amount of hot water or DIY drain cleaner will dissolve it. Using a wire hanger, carefully remove the obstruction. If you are having trouble removing the clog, leave it to us, so you don’t cause any damage to your drain.

If, after all of this, you still have not fixed your clogged issues, you know who to call!
